Soft Engineering for Bio-Embodied Design
The Soft Engineering for Bio-Embodied Design Laboratory pioneers the development of next-generation sensing systems that seamlessly integrate with biological environments. Established at POSTECH, our lab bridges the gap between advanced materials science, soft robotics, and biomedical engineering to create sensors and devices that can naturally interact with living systems.
Our research vision centers on developing soft, bio-integrated sensors capable of continuous, non-invasive monitoring within and on the human body. From wearable epidermal sensors to implantable neural interfaces, we engineer compliant materials and structures that match the mechanical properties of biological tissues, enabling long-term biocompatibility and reliable signal acquisition.
We develop soft sensors that can directly interact with the human body and biological environments. Unlike conventional rigid sensors, our sensors are compliant, deformable, and suitable for long-term contact with skin, tissues, nerves, and organs.
We study soft engineering approaches that combine material behavior and structural design to create shape-changing systems. Our research focuses on how soft materials and structures can be engineered to transform, actuate, and respond to external stimuli such as heat and mechanical force.
Beyond individual sensors or materials, we develop embodied sensing systems designed for physical AI. In these systems, sensing, memory, and interaction are integrated directly into soft materials and structures, allowing information to be perceived, stored, and processed through physical deformation and structural change.
